December 25, 2009 bonus - 2008 Documentary

I decided to have some family fun after presents and split up a $11 special of 2008 Documentary among all family members to help me open. It's the first time I've opened a whole box at one sitting. It certainly isn't as much fun to do it that way because it's hard to appreciate each card when opened in mass and the cataloging will take quite a bit longer compared to doing a couple packs a night. I'll spare you the whole box non-hit content listings and save the details for when I open future boxes a pack at a time.

December 25, 2009 - 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia Update

On Christmas, I open one pack that is fairly premium (at least by my box-purchasing standards). For the last 4 Christmas', I've been working on a box of 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia Update. Today was the final pack of the box and here is the image:




the Strawberry jumbo is numbered 96/100, and the Ensberg Spectrum parallel is numbered 41/50.

Previous years' "hits" have been a Pujols 5 item (including a piece of prime patch) card, a Paul LoDuca two item card, and a Michael Young auto (I can't remember offhand if that included a jersey swatch or just the auto).

I haven't decided yet which relatively premium product to buy and start busting beginning next Christmas.

I just finished cataloging these cards and Topps was awesome with this product. There were 2 relics in this box as guaranteed on-average and I was able to make one complete base set 1-125, so my sister's Christmas set is done and the next box I open in a few weeks/months will be to make my set.

I thought I'd go old-school and start up a box of 1993 Leaf Series 1 - 36 packs - 14 cards per pack - this box was $10 delivered when I recently bought it. There are 36 packs in the box and I'll probably only open a partial box to get started because I don't think you want to see 36 straight days of 1993 Leaf Series 1! ;) I think the cards are cool with the gold Leaf ribbon embossing on the front, cityscapes on the back, and rainbow foil embossing of the team logo on the back. I wonder if this was one of the first baseball cards to feature rainbow foil embossing, something that is more common nowdays than it probably was in the early 1990's as sportscards started to get fancier.

I'll list teams with the players since I'm sure a lot of us might not remember what team a player was with in 1993.

Karma had to be on my side when I opened the pack. I had been thinking of getting a Volquez auto because when he is healthy and has his stuff working, I enjoy watching him pitch. Since I'm a budget collector, I thought I'd get the auto while he was on the DL. I never did get to pull the trigger to get an auto so the pack gods were with me this time and I pulled one out of the pack. It's not very often the gods are with me, but this time it worked out good.

I'd say a pretty good pack -- weird to get Carlos Zambrano back-to-back in the pack (even though one was a checklist). I like the Neshek - i'll have to get it 'graphed if I got that card in my first box for my set. I am concerned about the Gorgen Jersey as that makes it two packs I"ve opened and two packs with hits. that only leaves like one more pack out of the next 14 with a hit if I recall the number of hits per box correctly. It's going to be a lot of packs with just cards to help me build my set and no hits unless there is a hot box possibility that I don't know about.
